BURO Website Design & Development
UX/UI Design

I designed and developed a new website for BURO Coffee, a local café located in Gastown, Vancouver. Previously, the café used a WordPress-based website, but to improve e-commerce functionality and provide a smoother online experience, we migrated the site to Shopify. The new platform made the site more user-friendly and easier to manage for both customers and the café.
Project Date: April - June, 2025

Design Process
I first created the design in Figma and collaborated closely with the client to refine both the visuals and functionality. A major change from the old website was the shift in product focus. While the old site featured perishable items like fresh drinks and sandwiches, the new site now redirects users to Uber Eats for those items, and instead focuses on selling packaged goods such as coffee beans, teas, and dry foods that can be shipped. This shift helped simplify the shopping experience for users.
The “Café” page also includes a Featured Menu section that lists specific beverage names, contributing to improved SEO performance. To maintain a clean and sophisticated look, I applied a minimalist color palette—primarily black and white—accented with soft beige and red. This not only enhanced readability but also gave the website a modern, refined atmosphere.
Shopify Development & Plugins
The site was developed using the Dawn theme on Shopify, which allowed for flexible customization. I implemented custom HTML and CSS for styling elements such as the desktop banner video, and adjusted the layout to display appropriately across desktop, tablet, and mobile
Key plugins used:
- Instafeed to display the café’s Instagram feed
- Subscriptions to enable recurring orders for coffee bean subscriptions
Photoshooting & Editing
I also took and edited product photos, adjusting the color balance in Photoshop to ensure visual consistency across the website.

Website Testing
After the website was built, I conducted end-to-end testing to ensure that orders could be successfully placed and processed. I also verified that the contact form was fully functional, including sending and receiving test emails to confirm delivery.
Challenges & Solutions
This was my first time building a website on Shopify, so I conducted extensive research to independently complete the project and gain hands-on experience with the platform. One of the most challenging aspects was migrating the domain from the previous WordPress site and configuring backend settings related to Shopify and hosting. These were unfamiliar processes, but I navigated them by consulting Google, ChatGPT, and official documentation.
Result & Next Steps
Although the website design is simple, it provides a clear and intuitive shopping experience. By focusing the online store on non-perishable products like coffee beans and redirecting customers to Uber Eats for fresh food and drinks, we created a more user-friendly and manageable platform. As a next step, I plan to help promote the site using Google Ads and social media marketing to increase visibility and drive more sales through the online store.
